Department Functions / Responsibilities:

The Legal Department serves as legal advisor to all City Departments, the City Council, and the Mayor.

• The Legal Department represents the City of Decatur at City board meetings as needed.
• The Legal Department is responsible for prosecuting cases in Decatur Municipal Court and for any appeals of those cases to the Circuit Court.
• Additional duties include drafting and reviewing City ordinances, regulations, and resolutions; attending all City Council meetings; handling claims against the City; and reviewing general legal affairs of the City.
