City Cemetery

The Decatur City Cemetery is a historic graveyard in Decatur, AL. Burials began as early as 1851, and the first recorded burial was in 1855. The cemetery is currently divided into seven sections: Original, Brown Circle, Harris Circle, Cantwell, Cowan, Decatur Land Company, Humes Addition, and Sterrs Addition. The Decatur Cemetery Association was organized on May 28, 1897, and controlled the cemetery until February 1, 1979, when the cemetery was deeded to the City of Decatur. Through the Association, the Brown and Wyker families were involved with the cemetery's management, and for many years the books were kept at Wyker's Hardware on Bank Street. The City of Decatur's Parks & Recreation Department manages and maintains the 50-acre cemetery today. Burial records are currently kept in the cemetery office at Ingalls Pavilion.

Other Improvements Prohibited

Except for headstones, markers, etc. as provided in Article VIII herein, no other permanent improvements (i.e., live flowers, trees, shrubs, fences, etc.) shall be permitted unless installed by the Parks and Recreation Department as a part of the Decatur Cemetery. All flower arrangements and related items will be removed 10 days after the funeral. Flower arrangements are limited to placement on headstones or markers only. The City reserves the right to remove all other arrangements, potted plants, and similar items when they become unsightly.
