The City of Decatur is committed to providing equal access to its digital information, programs, services, and activities for all users, including people with disabilities.
We continue to improve the accessibility and usability of our website and online services. Our goal is to provide a digital experience that allows residents, businesses, visitors, and employees to access City information and complete City business as independently as possible.
Our Accessibility Goal
The City uses the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, or WCAG, 2.1 Level AA, as its accessibility standard. These guidelines provide recommendations for making digital content more accessible to people with visual, hearing, mobility, cognitive, and other disabilities.
Accessibility is an ongoing responsibility. The City continues to review its website, documents, forms, videos, and online services as technology, standards, and community needs change.
Accessibility Practices
The City works to support digital accessibility through practices such as:
-
Providing text alternatives for meaningful images and graphics
-
Supporting keyboard navigation
-
Using responsive layouts that adapt to different devices and screen sizes
-
Maintaining readable text and sufficient color contrast
-
Providing clear labels and instructions for online forms
-
Adding captions to City-produced videos
-
Creating descriptive links and headings
-
Improving compatibility with screen readers and other assistive technologies
-
Reviewing documents and online services for accessibility barriers
Third-Party Content and Older Documents
Some content may be provided through third-party applications, external websites, archived materials, or older documents that the City did not create under current accessibility standards.
The City does not control every third-party platform, but we will work to help users access City programs, services, and information. Upon request, the City will make reasonable efforts to provide an accessible alternative or another method of obtaining the information.
