Enforcement Division

The City of Decatur’s Code Enforcement Division works to protect public health, safety, property values, and neighborhood quality throughout the community.

Code enforcement officers help residents, property owners, and businesses understand City requirements and work toward voluntary compliance whenever possible. When necessary, the division takes enforcement action to address conditions that violate City codes and ordinances.

What We Enforce

The Code Enforcement Division is responsible for enforcing:

• The 2018 International Property Maintenance Code
• The City’s Weed, Junk, and Litter Ordinance
• The City of Decatur Zoning Ordinance
• Alabama’s Weed Abatement Law
• Other applicable property maintenance and nuisance regulations

Common concerns may include overgrown grass or weeds, accumulated junk or litter, unsafe or neglected structures, abandoned vehicles, zoning concerns, and other property maintenance issues.

Report a Concern

Residents may report nonemergency code enforcement concerns through Decatur Direct, the City’s online public service request system.

When submitting a request, provide the property address, a clear description of the concern, and photographs when available. Accurate information helps City staff locate, review, and respond to the issue.

The Code Enforcement Division works with other City departments, property owners, and residents to address concerns and help keep Decatur safe, clean, and welcoming.
