ProgramsDYS: Building Opportunity for Decatur’s Youth
The City of Decatur created the Youth Services Department to help young people overcome barriers, discover opportunities, and build strong futures. The department grew from a mayoral task force that studied the economic, social, and educational challenges affecting Decatur’s youth.
Youth Services connects young people and families with programs, mentors, agencies, and community resources. The department also gathers information, identifies service gaps, and coordinates partnerships among schools, law enforcement agencies, nonprofits, churches, businesses, and other organizations serving youth.
Our Mission
The Youth Services Department leads and supports communitywide efforts that help young people succeed at home, in school, at work, and throughout the community.
The department focuses on prevention, education, mentorship, workforce preparation, family support, and positive youth development. Its work helps young people strengthen their confidence, make healthy decisions, develop leadership skills, and prepare for adulthood.
What We Do
The Youth Services Department works with community partners to:
-
Connect young people and families with educational, recreational, and support programs.
-
Promote school attendance, literacy, career readiness, and workforce development.
-
Expand access to positive mentors and role models.
-
Support programs that prevent substance misuse, violence, and gang involvement.
-
Help young people who face academic, economic, social, or personal barriers.
-
Coordinate resources for youth involved with the juvenile justice system.
-
Strengthen communication and cooperation among organizations serving children and families.
-
Encourage service, leadership, character development, and civic involvement.
Our Commitment
Youth Services serves young people from all backgrounds and neighborhoods. The department works to ensure that every young person has access to encouragement, guidance, and meaningful opportunities.
Through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to Decatur’s youth, the department helps young people recognize their potential and take positive steps toward a successful future.
